Relay Service for Persons with Oral Communication Deficit

The Relay Service for students with oral communication deficits aims to ensure immediate remote interpersonal communication, within the context of academic life, for students with disabilities and students with special educational needs who study in Departments/Faculties of the NKUA. Recipients of this service are students with total or partial hearing loss (Greek Sign Language users - GSL), students without speech or with severe dysarthria and in general students who cannot use the telephone for their interpersonal communication or who cannot participate in face-to-face oral communication. For the aforementioned cases, the term “Students with Speech Impairment - SSI” is used, which also includes GSL users as well as students who lipread.

The SSI who utilize the Relay Service (hereinafter referred to as RS) can communicate with their fellow students, their professors, the Accessibility Advisor Professors of their department, the administrative staff of the University as well as the rest of the Accessibility Unit's members. At the same time, the RS can be used bidirectionally, by the aforementioned individuals in case they want to communicate with the SSI users on issues related to the University. The subject of communication may vary: obtaining information about grades, resolving issues and clarifying assignments, guidelines, administrative issues, etc.

Further actions that fall within the responsibilities of the RS include the processing of requests from SCI regarding finding a GSL interpreter for attending courses or examinations, the development of electronic registration of applications and other RS data as well as the maintenance of quantitative and statistical data.
