Video Relay Service

video relay service model
The Video Relay Service (RS) is intended to be used by deaf or hard of hearing students users of Greek Sign Language and students without speech or with severe dysarthria and generally those who cannot use the phone for interpersonal communication. RS provides remote interpersonal communication in real-time with fellow students, teachers, and the administrative staff of the University. In the RS the user can communicate in the Greek Sign Language (GSL) through:
  • Internet-based video telephony: the student, who is a user of the greek sign language, communicates with the RS using a standard video chat (such as ooVoo or SKYPE) and the interpreter translates orally and in real-time on the telephone to the called party and vice versa. It can also be combined with a textphone. In the case of students with partial hearing loss it assists the communication using leap reading.
  • Textphone: the student sends text messages to the RS using a chat application and the interpreter translates orally and in real time on the telephone to the called party and vice versa (internet text relay service).
A presentation of the operation of the RS is given in the video.
