Built Environment Accessibility

Activities

Built Environment accessibility includes the following:

  • Ensuring that accessibility specifications are met in every new building of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA).
  • Applying modifications in existing buildings, so that they become accessible (e.g. installing ramps and lifts, construction of accessible toilet rooms, special signage for the vision-impaired, installing low water coolers and payphones, parking spaces for persons with disabilities’ cars).
  • Audio signs (using remote control) on the street lamps and special navigation routes on the pavements surrounding the buildings of the NKUA for the visually impaired.

The Directorate of Technical Services of the NKUA (TYPA) is responsible for providing built environment accessibility.

Complaints and Suggestions

Students with disabilities can contact the Accessibility Unit in order to submit their requests or indicate the obstacles they face within the university premises. Every issue reported by students with disabilities is forwarded to the Directorate of Technical Services by the Vice Rector for Academic and Student Affairs, in order to address it.

Students with disabilities can indicate or submit their requests regarding built environment accessibility issues by filling in the “Complaints and Suggestions Form” and sending it per e-mail at access@nulluoa.gr.

Evacuation plans of critical infrastructure

The European Center for Forest Fires (ECFF) has edited the issue “Evacuation Plans of critical built infrastructure in case of earthquake or fire for Persons with Disabilities”. The Accessibility Unit converted the original issue in accessible formats (TXT, large-print, MP#, DAISY) in Greek.
